A Qualitative Study of Online Synchronous Peer Tutoring for Freshmen at University: From the Perspective of Tutees

Objectives The purpose of this study is to explore the tutee’s experience in the course of online synchronous peer tutoring and to present the effective way to manage online synchronous tutoring. Methods This study collected data from freshmen who participated in 2020 online synchronous peer tutoring programs organized by Institute for Teaching and Learning of A university in the metropolitan area. 11 students took same major, and received their opinion about tutoring satisfaction, presence, motivation, advantage. In this study, Creswell’s six-step qualitative data analysis was used to increase the reliability and rigor of the entire process of analysis and interpretative, from coding to categorization. Categorized materials were finally edited and validated by the professor and 2 graduate students. Results Through this study, we could grasp the motivation, difficulty, advantage, gap between expectation and real, improvement of online synchronous peer tutoring. Second, tutees were participated peer tutoring for academical reason and adaptation of school life, and they can experience bond and satisfaction. Third, tutees were struggled with the pandemic situation and technological⋅administrative problems, but the peer tutoring was helpful in general. Fourth, tutees expected to operate tutoring such as Q&A format and face-to-face meetings, but there were cases where it was different from expectations due to the COVID 19 situation. Fifth, technical and administrative improvements, including tutor guidelines, were presented based on the difficulties, expectations, and gaps in reality felt in tutoring. Conclusions In this study, based on the above contents, the theoretical and practical methods for online peer tutoring conducted in university were examined and mentioned necessity of the helpful online synchronous peer tutoring for freshmen
