The Ontological Expression of Daily Objects Represented in Contemporary Art

초록/요약

The purpose of this research is to investigate the artistic value of the ontological expression of daily object by capturing the significant of its representation and grasping the detailed characteristics of its means in contemporary art since 2000. The essential part of the paper is 10 artworks analyzed under 3 categories in terms of ordinary objects elevating aesthetic appreciation, entities substituting the fullness or emptiness of daily life and discarded junks containing prominent recursive tendencies. In the theoretical background, based on the related books written by Danto, Dufrenne, Lefevre, Merleau-Ponty and Yi-Moon Park, the correlation in between physical objects and interpretations is discussed in order to understand the ontological expression of objects followed by descriptions about the principles of the intrinsic content of daily objects focused on the core of the metaphorical structure constructed through representation, expression and conceptualization. Daily objects in contemporary art are individually embodied beings that cannot be reduced to conventionally valid concepts but understood as expanding and deepening the meaning of everyday life as a catalyst that encourages the emergence of various ways of looking at the real world. It leads us to experience the world of possibility leaving from familiar world to unfamiliar one in the space between art and reality by the stepping into an ontological space that is completely different from the real world. In results of the case analysis, transfiguring as an object of aesthetic contemplation becomes more materialized according to metonymy representation which excludes the functionality of objects and concentrates on the form. The type metamorphosed to the experienced reality is differentiated through various formal expressions as a medium that metaphorizes the meaning of life embodied individually. The spectacular bricolage of garbage as a mediated reality induces us to experience the saturation of meaninglessness through a conceptual frame for reconsidering the current reality.
