본 논문은 현대미술에서 문자의 기호 역할과 의미작용의 연구를 위해 쉬빙의 문자 작품 중에서 문자를 소재로 사용한 작품을 주목하고, 작품에 내재한 특징을 기호에 대한 관점에서 분석한 것이다. 기호학 이론을 바탕으로 하여 의미작용 과정에 의해 문자 작품을 해석하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 연구의 방법은 다음과 같다. 먼저, 문자와 기호의 이론적 배경을 이해하기 위해 문자의 기원을 비롯한 문자의 변화 과정과 기호의 개념에 대해 살펴볼 것이다. 다음으로, 소쉬르와 퍼스의 이론을 살펴봄으로써 기호학의 주요 내용을 파악한다. 마지막으로 쉬빙의 작품 중 문자를 이용한 작품을 대상으로 삼아기호학의 이론에 근거하여 문자 작품에 나타난 시각기호의 특징을 기호적 관점으로 접근하여 분석할것이다. 이번 연구를 통해 도출한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기호학 이론은 언어라는 기호를 다루고있으므로 쉬빙의 작품을 언어로 해석하는데 유용한 개념을 제공하였다. 둘째, 문자는 체계의 해체와재구성을 통해 의미작용의 과정에서 기호의 무한한 확장이 가능하다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 셋째, 상형문자인 한자는 본질적으로 기호의 성격을 지니고 있으므로 단일 기호로 활용이 가능하고, 시각기호의 표현에 효과적이었다. 넷째, 보편적 기호들로 구축한 문법 체계는 개인의 경험 차이에 의해 다양한 의미작용이 생성되었다. 또한 기호학의 틀로 쉬빙의 작품이 드러내고 있는 기호화 과정을 통해 작품 속의 문자가 갖고 있는 의미를 확인할 수 있었다. 기호학의 기호와 시각예술의 기호는 분명 다르지만 이 두 기호의 간극을 좁히고, 기호학의 의미작용과정을 통해 시각기호를 해석할 수 있는 가능성을제시했다는 것에 본 논문의 의의를 두고자 한다.

In order to study the role of texts as signs and their signification in contemporary art, this study took notice of works that used texts as materials among Xu Bing's works and analyzed the inherent characteristics of the works from the viewpoint of signs. The purpose of this study is to interpret the text works by the signification process based on the semiotic theory. The method of this study is as follows. First, the process of changes in texts including the origin of texts and the concept of signs will be examined. Next, the main contents of semiotics will be grasped by examining the theories of Saussure and Peirce. Lastly, the characteristics of visual signs appearing in text works will be approached and analyzed from a semiotic viewpoint based on the theory of semiotics with the works that used texts among Xu Bing's works. The results derived through this study are as follows. First, since semiotic theories deal with the signs termed language, they provided a useful concept for interpreting Xu Bing's works in language. Second, it could be identified that signs can be infinitely expanded in the process of signification through the dissolution and reconstruction of the text system. Third, since Chinese characters, which are hieroglyphics, essentially have the characteristics of signs, they could be used as single signs and were effective in expressing visual signs. Fourth, in the grammatical system constructed with universal symbols, various meanings were created due to differences in individuals experiences. In addition, it was possible to identify the meanings of the texts in the works through the process of signification revealed by Xu Bing's works as a framework for semiotics. The signs in semiotics and those in visual art are clearly different, and this paper can be regarded as meaningful in that it narrowed the gap between these two different signs and presented the possibility of interpreting visual signs through the signification process of semiotics.
