Objectives The purpose of this study is to investigate characteristics and development of teacher activities in a professional learning community targeting science inquiry instruction. Methods Data collection consisted of 26 audio-recordings of teacher discussion in a teacher learning community for one year. We were able to explain the characteristics of teacher activities in a teacher learning community by categorizing into four periods such as Introduction, Growth I, Growth II, and Maturity. Results During the Introduction period, teachers collaborated to examine lesson plans that each teacher developed and to reflect on teaching practice based on retrospective description. During the Growth I period, teachers collaboratively analyzed science curriculum and discussed video-recordings of teaching practice in addition to the activities that they implemented during the Introduction period. During the Growth II period, teachers discussed to design detailed and elaborated lesson plans including teacher-student interaction scenario. During the Maturity period, all the activities in a professional learning community were more efficiently implemented. Conclusions It appeared that teacher activities such as analyzing science curriulum, designing inquiry lesson plans, and reflecting teaching practices were gradually improved from Introduction to Maturity stage of the professional learning community.
