As the importance of computational thinking is ever growing in a digital information society, this study aims to investigate computational thinking embedded in middle school mathematics textbooks under the 2015 revised curriculum. We collected 191 tasks related ‘information-processing’ from eight different textbooks and coded them based on the revised framework of Weintrop et al.(2016). Using both quantitative and qualitative analyses, the study indicated that a huge gap existed in the textbooks in terms of sub-elements and practices in computational thinking. A few elements were not found in any textbook. The two different tasks dealing with the same mathematical concept often provided different experiences for computational thinking. As a consequence, the paper argues that the current textbooks do not provide enough opportunities to learn computational thinking. The results led to a further discussion for future studies on computational thinking in mathematics education.
