경제교육에서 환경문제를 어떻게 다룰 것인가?: 코어경제학(CORE Economy)을 중심으로

본 연구에서는 가장 중요한 현안으로 인식되고 있는 글로벌 이슈로서의 환경문제가 전통적인 경제학 및 경제교육에서 용이하게 다뤄질 수 없는 원인을 신고전파 경제학(neoclassical economics)의 방법론 및 경제원론 교과서의 내용과 서술체계의 한계에서 찾아보았다. 또한 더 나아가 환경문제를 경제교육의 범위 안에 포함할 수 있는 대안적인 방안을 모색하기위해서 최근 전 세계적으로 경제학 교과서로 채택률이 높아지고 있는 코어경제학(CORE Economy)의 방법론, 내용, 서술방식을 분석적으로 검토 하였다. 코어경제학은 표준적인 원론 교과서들과는 다르게 현실과 유리되지 않는 경제교육을 목표로하기 때문에 현실의 문제를 먼저 심층적으로 다룸으로써 학생들의 문제의식을 확립시킨 후 경제학적 분석 방법을 제시하는특징을 지니고 있다. 코어경제학은 글로벌 현안 중에서 기후변화로 인한 환경문제를 가장 중요한 문제로 인식하고 합리적 행위자 모형을 가정하는 기존 경제교과서에서 나아가 최근 경제연구의 발전에 따른 전략적이고 상호적인 경제적 행위자 모형을 토대로 경제학의 핵심 방법론인 비용편익 분석을 제공하고 있다. 동시에 기존의 교과서에서 쉽게 다루지 못했던 정책대안에 관한 분석이 심층적으로 이루어져 문제중심교육(Problem-based Learning)에도 효과적으로 적용될 수 있을 것이다.

초록/요약

This research tries to find reasons why one of the most critical problems in contemporary global society such as environmental issues has not been taught properly in economics education in both colleges and high schools. In doing so, the researchers have critically reviewed the limits of content and methodology in neoclassical economics textbooks that are widely used in classrooms in colleges and partly in high schools. In order to search for an alternative approach that can promote the incorporation of environmental issues into economics education, the researchers have closely reviewed the methodology, contents, and structure of the CORE Economy textbook that has recently gained a substantial popularity worldwide. The CORE Economy textbook, unlike traditional introductory economics textbooks, aims to directly deal with real issues that are closely related to our everyday life. It offers economic analyses after directing students to in-depth understanding of the real and applicable problems in our society. The CORE Economy acknowledges environmental problems in relation to climate change as the most important issue of our time and adopts a model that embraces strategic economic actors based on reciprocal preferences rather than economic actors based on rationality assumption that are widely adopted in traditional economics textbooks. It does not neglect to offer the cost-benefit analysis of environmental problems as is often the case with some textbooks that attempt to provide alternative approaches. The CORE Economy also guides students to search for policy implications that are closely related to the problems, which is then easily and effectively applied to the curriculum with Problembased Learning.
