A Study of Dance Work ｢Liminality｣

초록/요약

본 논문은 균형과 불균형의 경계에서의 움직임을 탐구하여 창작한 무용작품 ｢경계에서｣를 연구하여 연구자의 안무방법을 개발하고, 안무가로서 점검과 예술적 방향을 확립하는데 목적이 있다. 본 연구는 실기기반연구법(Practice Based Research)을 사용하여 무용작품 ｢경계에서｣의 작품구상부터 안무 및 연습, 그리고 공연까지의 전 창작과정과 공연된 작품을 분석하였다. 본 연구의 내용과 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 움직임 탐구과정에서 무용수들의 자발적 참여를 촉진하는 워크숍을 진행한 결과, 무용수들은 자신만의 고유한 균형 상태를 ‘감각’하였다. 둘째, 불균형 상태의 감각을 느끼게 함으로써 중심축 정렬의 변화, 다양한 방향으로의 무게중심 이동, 무용수들 간의 몸, 몸과 지면 간의 접촉에 의한 상호 작용을 통해 ‘새로운 움직임’을 이끌어낼 수 있었다. 셋째, 작품분석을 통해 균형과 불균형이 공존하는 영역인 경계에서 ‘불안정성’, ‘역동성’, ‘유동성’의 움직임 특성이 드러났다. 본 연구는 작품줄거리의 전개나 특정 관념을 표현하는 발레 창작과 달리 실험적 방식으로 움직임 탐구를 통해서 발레 작품을 창작했다는 데에 의미가 있다. 또한 안무자와 무용수의 관계가 창작의 동반자로서 소통의 중요성을 확인하고, 이들의 상호작용이 작품의 예술적 표현에 긍정적인 영향을 줄 수 있음을 확인하였다. 마지막으로 안무자로서 예술에 대한 도전의식을 함양하고, 포스트모던 시대의 안무방식에 새로운 방향성을 모색하는데 의의를 가진다. 더불어 본 연구에서 클래식발레에서의 균형에 대한 인식을 확장하여 몸의 균형과 불균형을 오고가는 과정에서 발레무용수가 어떠한 선택과 결정을 통해 움직임을 이어가는지 면밀히 탐구하고자 한다. 그리고 균형에서 벗어난 불균형 상태에서 다시 새로운 균형의 상태로 넘어 가고자 하는 경계에서 나타나는 독창적인 움직임과 그 특성을 확인하였다. 실기기반연구를 활용한 본 연구가 움직임 탐구를 기반으로 창작발레를 하려는 예술가들에게 하나의 참고가 되기를 바란다.

The current study covers the entire creative process and description of the dance artwork ｢Liminality｣. ｢Liminality｣ is an exploration of the movements that occur at the boundary between balance and off-balance of ballet dancers. The purpose of this study is to develop a new method and establish self-examination and artistic direction as a choreographer. As for this purpose, this practice-based research analyzed ｢Liminality｣'s entire creative process including the conception, choreography, practice, and performance of the artwork. The results of the study are as follows. First, in the process of exploring the movements, the dancers were able to ‘feel’ their own state of balance. In this exploration process, the choreographer conducted a workshop to facilitate the voluntary participation of the dancers instead of presenting the movements, which was effective in sensing a state of balance. Second, by feeling the sense of imbalance, the dancers were able to create ‘new movements’ on the border between balance and off-balance. In this process, they derived new movements through the interactions of the shift of the central axis, the shift of the center of gravity, the dancers' bodies, and the contacts between the body and the ground. Third, the analysis of the artwork revealed the characteristics of the movements of ‘instability’, ‘dynamics’, and ‘fluidity’. Considering the overall Korean ballet creation that expresses story development or ideas, it is significant to create a ballet artwork using movement explorations in an experimental way. In addition, it emphasizes the democratic communications of the choreographer and dancers as creative partners rather than a hierarchical relation. This interactive way of communications helped to make the artwork more artistic. Furthermore, this study has the significance of seeking a new direction for art in the postmodern era and a sense of challenge for art where a choreographer should always make new attempts. It is hoped that this study contributes to the artworks of other choreographers who aim to do creative ballet based on movement explorations.
