A Study on the Dance Work ｢Immortal Life through Passage of Time｣

This thesis presents with the study on to what extent the choreographic intention and the theme, namely ‘introspection on life and death through the features of Buddhist samsara’, set during the stage of designing the dance work｢Immortal life through passage of time｣were effectively expressed in the work. Its purpose is to examine how the features of samsara were integrated in the movements of Korean dance and the choreographer’s original dance method, along with the artistic meaning that this realizes. The process of this study consists of the first step plan and design, the second choreograph and practice, the third perform and appreciate, the fourth analyse and evaluate. This was associated with ‘space’, ‘movement’, and ‘time’ of the work and realized into a dance work. The result of studying｢Immortal life through passage of time｣with the focus on the relationship between such theme and the composition is as below. Firstly, samsara is described as a return in the work. This was shown as the circle, the objet used in the work, played a role of revealing the relationship between the ‘circularity’ and ‘spatiality’. Secondly, restricting the space through the circle resulted in the energy flow moving in one direction, which appeared as an expression of ‘the constancy of spatiality’ in the work. Thirdly, the choreography based on the relationship between ‘repeatability’ and ‘movement’ created the new world of ‘changeable space’. Finally, the researcher realized that it is possible to concentrate on the movements inherent in body through the compositional method that focuses on the features of samsara that consists of karma and samsara. The significance of the study is that, through this, one experienced the method of expressing externally and established an original dance language. Through this, the researcher has received a lot of help in establishing the artistic values on stage, and seeks to contribute in creating a new way of expression.

본 논문은 무용 작품 ｢멈추지 않는 순간｣을 구성하는 단계에서 설정한 ‘불교생명론 윤회의 특징을 통한 삶과 죽음의 자기성찰’이라는 안무 의도와 주제가 작품에서 잘 표현되었는지 연구한 것이다. 윤회(輪回)의 특징이 어떻게 한국무용의 움직임과 안무자의 독창적 춤 방법으로 구성되는지를 살펴보고, 이를 통해 구현되는 예술적 의미를 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 본 연구는 문헌 연구를 통해 무용 작품 ｢멈추지 않는 순간｣의 주제와 내용을 설정하였고 연구한 내용을 기반으로 도출한 윤회의 특성을 뽑아 작품의 핵심 내용으로 구축하였다. 이를 윤회의 상징성을 지닌 ‘원’에 내재한 특성과 결부하여 작품으로 구상하였다. 이러한 주제와 구성의 연관성에 주목하여 문헌 연구와 실기기반연구(Practice Based Research)를 병행하여 연구하였다. 이를 통해 첫째, 작품에서 윤회의 특성인 ‘순환성은 죽음’의 주제를 표현과정에서 다시 제자리로 돌아오는 환원성(還元性)으로 표현되었다. 둘째, 오브제인 원을 통한 공간의 제한적 사용은 작품에서 무용수를 통해 되돌아오고 다시 출발하는, 또는 다른 자극이나 변화에도 그 상태를 유지하는 에너지로 표현되었다. 셋째, 움직임을 구와 절로 만들어 반복하고 오브제 원을 한 개에서 세 개로 변화함으로써 새로운 공간인 가변적 공간이 창조되었다. 넷째, 윤회의 특성인 영원성(永遠性)을 표현하면서 작품을 통해 무대 뒤로 퇴장함으로써 완전히 비워내는 것으로 구성하였다. 이를 통해 모든 것으로부터 자유로워지는 시·공간적 공(空)의 단계를 표현하면서 초월성을 만들어내었다. 본 연구자는 윤회의 특징에 몰입하는 구성을 통해 내재 된 움직임에 집중하면서 오브제의 활용의 표현과 움직임을 보다 밖으로 표출하는 방법을 경험하며, 독창적 춤 언어를 정립해갔다는 점에서 연구의 의미가 있다. 본 안무자는 주제에 입각한 움직임의 구성을 통해 예술적 가치관을 확립해 나가고 더 나아가 새로운 표현 방식을 만들어내는 데 기여하고자 한다.
