현대 아프리카 패션 디자이너의 작품 특성에 관한 연구 -테베 마구구, 케네스 이제이, 웨카포레 지브릴을 중심으로-

본 연구는 아프리카 디자이너들의 활동이 패션계의 전례 없는 주목을 받고 있다는 흥미로운 현실에서출발했다. 본 연구는 현세대의 아프리카 패션을 대표하는 세 명의 디자이너, 테베 마구구, 케네스 이제이, 웨카포레 지브릴이 전개하는 브랜드의 정신 그리고 디자인 표현 특성을 살피고 동시에 이것이 시사하는 바를 밝히는 데 목적을 두었다. 연구 대상은 아프리카에 뿌리를 두고 활동하면서 국제적으로저명한 패션 어워드에서 수상하거나 글로벌 매거진에 조명 받는 브랜드로 설정했다. 이후, 그들의 브랜드 컬렉션, 룩북, 인터뷰, 컬렉션 리뷰 및 보도 자료를 수집하여 면밀히 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 그들은 아프리카인으로서 사명과 자부심이 자신의 브랜드의 정체성 형성과 작품의 공통적인 뼈대를 이루었으며, 과거 아프리카에 대한 서구의 착취가 만들어낸 흑인다움과는 다른 시선으로 컬렉션을 전개하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 마구구는 남아프리카 공화국의 전통과 정신을 기반으로 한 여성복을 시작했으며, 동시대 남아프리카를 대변하기 위한 사명감을 표출하였다. 나이지리아의 전통 계승을 기반으로 한디자인을 선보이고 있는 이제이 역시 지역 정신과 산업의 발전적 도모에 깊은 책임감을 느끼고 있음을 표했다. 지브릴의 경우, 서아프리카의 향수와 정신을 자신의 브랜드 미학으로 삼고 있었으며, 그들의 디자인 표현 특성은 서양 중심의 에스닉 디자인 표현의 탈피, 정체성의 주체적 코드화, 흑인 모델구성을 통한 강한 주체 의식 표출 등의 세 가지 양상으로 분류할 수 있었다. 현대 아프리카 디자이너들의 부상은 서구중심주의 관점으로 해석되던 아프리카에 대한 의식의 재고를 요한다. 아프리카 패션미학이 제3세계 디자인을 넘어 문화와 미학의 주체로 부상하고 있다. 이들이 보여주는 아프리카에 대한 미학적 표현은 향후 패션계에 더욱 큰 반향을 일으킬 것이라 예상한다.

초록/요약

Numerous activities of African designers have been receiving unprecedented attention in the fashion world, and this has triggered me to engage in this study. This study intends to examine how the three designers, Thebe Magugu, Kenneth Ize, and Wekafore Jibril, who represent the current generation of African fashion, express their brand identity as well as to observe the characteristics of their designs and how they are expressed, along with their implications in today’s fashion. Several designers, who have won internationally renowned fashion awards or are highlighted in global magazines, with brands rooted in Africa, were selected as the subjects. Afterward, their brand collections, look books, interviews, collection reviews, and press releases were collected and analyzed closely. This research has revealed that their mission and pride as Africans have played a role in creating their brand identity, and the development of their collections has been independent of the conventional African perspective unfairly enforced by the Western exploitation of Africa in the past. Thebe Magugu first started women's wear based on the tradition and spirit of South Africa and has been expressing a sense of commitment to represent his country. Ize, who is presenting designs based on the legacy of Nigeria, also has been expressing a deep sense of responsibility for the development of the community spirit and industry of his nation. Wekafore, in addition, has incorporated West African nostalgia and spirit into his brand aesthetic, and his design characteristics reflect the following aspects: breaking away from the Western-centered ethnic design, and a strong sense of identity through featuring black models. The rise of contemporary African designers calls for a reconsideration of how Africa should be viewed since the country has been evaluated from a western-centric viewpoint. The aesthetics of African fashion is emerging as a subject of culture and aesthetics that goes beyond the design concept present in third world countries. It is expected that their aesthetic expressions of Africa will have a great resonance with the fashion world in the near future.
