이 논문은 아리스토텔레스가 자연학 4권에서 시간을 본격적으로 논의하면서 제시한 두 개의 시간에 관한 파라독스/퍼즐을 다룬다. 첫 번째 파라독스는 시간의 존재에 대한 것이다. 과거는 존재했지만 지금 존재하지는 않고 미래는 존재할 것이 지만 역시 지금 존재하지는 않는다. 현재는 지금 존재하지만 순간적이기 때문에 시 간의 존재에 기반을 제공할 시간의 부분이라고 할 수 없다. 두 번째 파라독스는 지 금이 항상 같은지 아니면 다른지에 대한 딜레마이다. 어느 쪽을 선택하더라도 받아 들일 수 없는 결론이 따라 나온다. 필자는 아리스토텔레스의 이 두 개의 시간의 파 라독스를 논의하고 아리스토텔레스가 명시적으로 제시하고 있지는 않은 아리스토텔 레스적 대답을 제시한다. 이를 통해 필자는 아리스토텔레스가 제시하는 시간 및 지 금에 대한 적절한 철학적 이해가 어떻게 이 두 파라독스를 해결하는지를 보인다.

This paper discusses the two puzzles of time Aristotle presents at the beginning of his treatment of time in Physics IV, chs. 10-14. The first puzzle concerns the reality of time. None of the parts of time can be the basis of time’s existence. The past was but not is; the future will be but not is; the present (instant) is but, being instantaneous, cannot be a part of time that can be the basis of the existence of time. The second puzzle pertains to the dilemma concerning the identity of the now, that is, whether or not the now is always different or the same. Whichever horn you might take, some absurd consequences seem to follow. I discuss these two puzzles of time and to suggest the soluations. I claim that once we are equipped with Aristotle’s technical refinements such as the now’s being instantaneous and time’s essential dependency on change (and change on substances, in turn) we can see how Aristotle would solve them.
