본 논문은 FEBC 극동방송의 설립과 발전 과정을 사례로 삼아 현대 사회에서 종교와 정치가 교차하고 뒤섞이는 모습을 비판적으로 검토한다. 20세기 중반 시작된 전 세계적 냉전 갈등은 미국에 근거를 둔 기독교 단체들이 동아시아에 있는 공산권 국가에 접근하는 것을 불가능하게 만들었다. 그래서 이들 중 일부는 소위 ‘죽(竹)의 장막’ 너머에 있는 사람들을 대상으로 기독교 선교와 반공주의적 정치적 선전을 동시에 수행하기 위해 라디오 방송을 시작했다. 본 연구에서는 FEBC 극동방송의 설립에 참여한 국내외 여러 관련 단체들, 그중에서도 특히 The Evangelical Alliance Mission과 Far East Broadcasting Company라는 두 기독교 조직이 여러 나라의 정치인들, 군 당국자들 그리고 선교 단체들과 교류해온 역사를 추적할 것이다. 이러한 역사적 분석은 냉전 갈등의 상황 속에서 종교가 라디오 방송을 매개로 하여 정치와 경제 영역에 진출하며 공적·사적 영역을 넘나드는 양상을 선명하게 드러낼 것이다.

초록/요약

This paper explores the ways in which religion and politics intersect and intermingle with each other by tracing the development of the FEBC Korea. The dawning of the Cold War made it difficult for American-based missionary organizations to access the communist countries in East Asia. Therefore, some ventured into radio broadcasting to continue the Christian mission, as well as to broadcast anticommunist political propaganda. Paying special attention to the histories of TEAM (The Evangelical Alliance Mission) and FEBC (Far East Broadcasting Co.), the two Christian organizations that later merged to form today’s FEBC Korea, this research examines how they interacted with politicians, military personnel, and other missionary organizations in various East Asian countries. Such an analysis sheds light on the interactions between religion and politics through the medium of radio broadcasting across the private and public domains.
