이 글에서는 황해도 방언의 모음 체계와 그것의 통시적 변화에 대하여 논의하였다. 황해도 장연 지역어 음성 자료를 중심으로 검토하되, 20세기의 각 시기별 황해도 방언 자료를 대비함으로써 모음 체계의 통시적 변화 과정 및 진행 중인 변화의 방향에 대하여 논의하였다. 주요 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 20세기 초엽의 황해도 방언은 /ㅚ/(=/ö/)를 포함한 9모음 체계였으나 /ㅚ/는 이후 점진적으로 비음운화한 것으로 보인다. 둘째, 20세기 초・중엽 이후에는 /ㅡ/의 조음역이 점차 /ㅓ/ 쪽으로 이동함으로써 모음 체계상 /ㅡ/>/ㅓ/의 합류가 진행되어 온 것으로 보인다. 후설 모음 /ㅡ, ㅓ, ㅜ, ㅗ/의 간극이 점차 협소화되는 방향으로 일련의 변화가 진행되고 있다. 셋째, 20세기 중엽 이후 황해도 방언에서는 /ㅓ/>/ㅗ/ 방향의 변화가 급속히 전개된 것으로 추정된다. 넷째, /ㅚ/의 비음운화, /ㅡ/>/ㅓ/의 합류 및 /ㅓ/>/ㅗ/의 합류가 완료되면 황해도 방언의 모음 체계는 /ㅣ(i), ㅔ(e), ㅐ(ɛ), ㅏ(a), ㅜ(ɯ), ㅗ(ɔ)/의 6모음 체계가 될 것으로 예측된다.

In this article, the vowel system of the Hwanghae-do dialect and its diachronic changes were discussed. The speech data of the Jangyeon subdialect of the Hwanghae-do was mainly examined, but the process of the diachronic change of the vowel system and the direction of the ongoing change were discussed by comparing the Hwanghae-do dialect data for each period of the 20th century. The main contents of the discussion are as follows. First, in the early 20th century, the Hwanghae-do dialect was a nine-vowel system, including /ö/, but /ö/ seems to have been gradually dephonologized. Second, after the early and mid 20th century, the region of articulation of /ɨ/ gradually moved toward /ə/, and it seems that the merger of /ɨ/>/ə/ has progressed in the vowel system. A series of changes are progressing in the direction that the gap between the back vowels /ɨ, ə, u, ɔ/ gradually narrows. Third, it is estimated that the change in /ə/>/ɔ/ direction has rapidly developed in the Hwanghae-do dialect since the middle of the 20th century. Fourth, the vowel system of the Hwanghae-do dialect is expected to be /i, e, ɛ, a, ɯ, ɔ/ when the dephonologization of /ö/, the merger of /ɨ/>/ə/ and the merger of /ə/>/ɔ/ are completed.
