디지털 매체 활용을 중심으로 분석한 주자나 리코의 활자체 디자인

최초의 개인용 컴퓨터가 보급된 이래로 디지털 기술은 더 이상 디자인과 뗄 수 없는 필수적인 요소가되었다. 빠른 기술 발달로 인해 역으로 디자이너가 기술 발달에 맞춰야 하는 상황이 발생하는 오늘날, 디자인이 디지털 기술과 적절히 공존할 방법을 모색하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 매킨토시의 보급 이후 새로운 매체를 작업의 수단이자 동기로 적극적으로 활용하였던 디자이너주자나 리코의 활자체를 디지털 매체 활용 방식을 중심으로 분석하였다. 연구 범위인 주자나 리코의활자체 작품을 세 가지의 분류로 나누어 소분류 아래 각 폰트의 특징과 디지털 매체와의 연관성을 분석한 결과, 주자나 리코의 활자체에서 나타난 디지털 매체 활용 특성 세 가지를 확인할 수 있었다. 첫번째로 당대 디지털 매체의 한계를 아이디어로 활자 형태를 제작하였다는 점이다. 저해상도 또는 저용량의 문제 등 당대 매체에서 창작의 장애물로 여겨질 수 있는 부분에 착안하여 활자 형태를 만드는 모습을 보였다. 두 번째로 당대 디지털 매체의 이점 역시 적극적으로 이용하였다는 점이다. 매체가 제공하는 자동화 방식 또는 활자 옵션을 활용하여 활자 형태와 구성을 다양하게 제안하였다. 마지막으로디지털 활자의 형식을 응용하여 폰트에 글자 이상의 기능과 미감을 부여하였다는 점이다. 폰트가 문자이자 이미지로 기능하는 한편, 문자성을 지우고 이미지만으로도 구현되는 작업을 통해 폰트라는 매체의 확장 가능성을 보여주었다. 주자나 리코의 작업 연구를 통해 더욱 깊이 있게 그의 작업을 이해하고, 나아가 디자인에서의 디지털 매체 활용에 대한 시사점을 발견할 수 있기를 기대한다.

Since the Macintosh 128k in 1984, digital tools have become integral in design fields. It is hard to imagine designers, especially graphic designers free from computers while working. Before the introduction of the personal computer, technology development in the graphic design field derived from designers’ needs. However, due to the rapid development in technology, designers today have to face the situation of adapting to technology themselves rather than making technology accommodate their needs. Therefore, it is crucial to find a way for design to coexist with digital technology in our era, and the purpose of this study lies in finding it. For that purpose, this study mainly analyzes the font design of Zuzana Licko, well known for her experimental and creative typefaces used in the graphic design magazine <Emigre> of the 80s and 90s. Licko adapted technology in font design processes not only as a tool but also as an inspiration. This study focuses on how Licko uses digital technology in her work. As a result of the analysis, there were three main characteristics from her typeface design processes. First, she experimented limitations of technology for her typeface design. Low resolution or the low memory limit of the primitive computer became an idea for designing fonts. Second, she freely explored the possibilities of technology for her typefaces. Either using an automation method on the computer to make a typeface shape or organizing diverse options of fonts, she did not hesitate to use new technology in her fonts. Finally, she used the format of a digital font to provide an aesthetic beyond alphabetic characters in type design. By using letterform as a pattern or image, Licko showed the possibility of breaking free of a specific format and sought design beyond form. With a deep understanding of Zuzana Licko’s typeface design, the results of this study will show diverse and creative ways to connect design and technology.
