초록/요약
이 논문은 최근에 Historiography of Philosophy라는 제목으로 출판된 미카엘 프레데의 넬리 윌리스 강의를 비판적으로 고찰함으로써 부족하나마 서양고대철학을 어떻게 연구하고 가르칠 것인지를 다루고자 한다. 프레데는 철학사 연구 방법을 세 가지 – 학술지적 연구, 철학의 철학적 역사, 철학의 역사적 역사 – 로 나누고 특히나 학술지적 연구에 대해 시대착오를 저지르고 있다는 비판은 이러한 연구방법들의 성격을 오해한 것이라고 주장한다. 필자는 프레데의 주장에서 첫 번째로는 이러한 삼분법을, 두 번째로는 철학사에 대한 철학적 접근방법에서의 시대착오의 중요성에 대한 프레데의 평가를 비판한다. 그 과정에서 철학사 연구와 철학 연구를 너무나 당연하다는 듯이 구별하는 프레데의 전제에 대해 독특하게도 철학에서는 ‘X는 X의 역사가 아니다’라는 너무나 상식적으로 보이는 원칙이 적용되지 않을 가능성을 논한다. 철학사 연구에 대한 이러한 반성적 성찰은 철학이 다른 학문 분야와 사뭇 구별되는 특징을 드러내줌을 통해 철학이 무엇인지에 대한 흥미로운 통찰을 제공해준다.

This paper aims to deal with the question of how we should study and educate history of philosophy by reflecting on Michael Frede’s posthumously published Historiography of Philosophy. Frede distinguishes three different approaches of history of philosophy, 1) Philosophical doxography, 2) Philosophical history of philosophy, and 3) Historical history of philosophy; and claims that charging doxographical works with the fault of anachronism is wrong because this charge stems from confusing the philosophical enterprise with the historical one. I criticize Frede’s views of three-fold distinction of the study of history of philosophy and of the extent of importance of anachronism in the study of history of philosophy, taking issues with his premise that the study of history of philosophy is distinct from the study of philosophy. I believe that this kind of reflections on the study of history of philosophy provide interesting meta-philosophical insights into what philosophy is by showing unique characteristics that only philosophy exhibits in contrast with other intellectual disciplines.
