이 글은 국문장편소설 <창란호연록> 속 장우의 차실(次室) 양난주의 형상화 양상을 살펴보고 그러한 형상화 방식의 의미와 기능을 규명해보고자 한 것이다. 이 글에서는 사대부 출신 여성임에도 창기로 팔렸다가 속량을 통해 신분을 회복하는 양난주를 주목하고자 한다. 양난주는 신분 회복을 위해 손님으로 온 이와 적극적으로 결연하는 창기로도 그려지기도 하며, 속량시켜준 남성과 그 정실의 부부 관계를 위해 자취를 감춘 상황에서 죽을 위기에 처한 남성을 치료해주는 길 위의 여성으로 그려지기도 한다. 또한 혼인을 통해 가문 안으로 편입된 후에도 죽을 위기에 처한 정실을 구하기 위해 집밖 공간으로 나가는 것을 감행하는 차실(次室)로도 나타난다. 이러한 <창란호연록> 속 양난주의 형상은 이 작품이 정조(貞操)보다 생명을 중시하는 실리를 추구하는 사고를 지니고 있음을 드러내준다. 또한 이 같은 양난주의 형상은 일부다처 상황 속에서 남성이 마음을 나누어 제가(齊家)를 바로 한다는 것의 어려움을 보여주는 동시에 가부장제 사회에서 투기하지 않는 여성의 고통을 드러내준다는 점에서 의미가 있다. 이와 함께 양난주 형상은 현실적 방법을 조력의 방법으로 사용함으로써 작품의 실감 조성에 기여하는 동시에 상층 여성인물과 하층 여성인물의 조력 방식을 동시에 수행한다는 점에서 여성 인물의 역할 확장을 보여준다고 볼 수 있다.

The objectives of this study were to examine the figuration pattern of Nan-ju Yang, the second wife of Jang-woo in the Korean novel “Changranhoyeonrok” and to understand the meaning and function of such a figuration method. This article focused on Nan-ju Yang who was sold as a prostitute even though she was born in a noble family and then recovered her status through redemption. Yang Nan-ju was described as a prostitute who actively formed a relationship with a customer to recover her social status. Moreover, she was portrayed as a prostitute who took care of a man who was in danger of dying while she was hiding for the marital relationship between the man who redeemed her social status and his first wife. She was also depicted as the second wife who left the house to rescue the first wife even after she was a part of the family through marriage. The figure of Nan-juYangin “Changranhoyeonrok” emphasized life than fidelity(貞操), which revealed that this novel valued practical interest. It also showed that this work was associated with the Yeohang class among various readers. The figure of Nan-ju Yang was meaningful in terms of revealing the difficulty of men in managing the wife and concubine peacefully and the hardship of women who had not to be jealous in a patriarchal society at the same time. The figure of Nan-ju Yang used a realistic method to assist others, which contributed to making it more realistic. Moreover, it was meaningful in terms of expanding the role of female characters because she simultaneously carried out the assistance methods of the upper and lower classes.
