이 논문의 주제는 기독교의 사랑을 논의주제로 삼아 ‘사랑하라’는 명령이 성립가능한지를 묻고 그에 대해 부정적인 대답을 내놓는다. 사랑의 개념상 ‘사랑’과 ‘명령에대한 복종’이라는 개념 사이에는 충돌이 있어서 (‘사랑하라’는) 명령에 복종함을통해 진정한 사랑을 할 수는 없기 때문이다. ‘사랑하라’에 담겨있는 지시의 계기는(만약 지시의 계기가 있다면) 복종하지 않으면 벌이 준비되어 있는 명령이라기보다는 권유, 권고로 이해되어야 하며 명령과 복종이라는 법칙적 틀에서 보다는신이 먼저 갖추고 우리를 그를 통해 감화하는 신적 덕의 틀에서 이해되는 것이낫다고 주장한다. ‘사랑하라’는 명령에 대한 이러한 비판적 논의는 우리가 사랑하고경배할 만한 신의 특성에 대한 이해를 촉발한다.

This paper asks whether the command to love (God and the neighbors) should be understood really as a ‘command’. My answer is in the negative. I argue that the notion of love conflicts with the notion of obeying command and with the notion of obligation and therefore that ‘Love God’ should not be understood as a command, especially in legalistic terms of threat of punishment in case of disobedience. The urging element in ‘Thou shall love God’ , if there is any, should instead be understood as sincere entreatment or imploration. The Christian God is not commanding God but inspiring or moving God, who inspires or moves us by revealing Gods’ divine virtue of Love through Jesus, and this shows the very praiseworthiness of God and opens for us the very possibility of truly loving.
