본 연구는 은퇴한 중장년층을 대상으로 사회참여 과정의 경험을 탐색하여 사회참여가 이들에게 어떠한 의미가 있고 사회참여를 증진시키기 위해 어떠한 전략이 필요한지를 재발견하기 위한 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 50세에서 64세의 은퇴한 중장년 11명을 대상으로 포커스 그룹 인터뷰를 실시하였고, 주제분석 방법을 활용하여 사회참여 과정의 의미와 전략을 탐색하고자 하였다. 연구결과, 6개의 상위주제와 23개의 하위주제가 도출되었다. 상위주제는 ‘마음은 이팔청춘인 나의 은퇴: 걱정과 기대의 공존’, ‘생각보다 쉽지 않은 사회진입의 장벽’, ‘한번 더 힘을 내보는 인생 2막’, ‘뚜렷한 바램을 충족시키는 사회활동탐색’, ‘나에게 맞는 다양한 길의 새로운 도전과 한계’, ‘새로운 시작을 위해 필요한 사회적 지원’이다. 이러한 연구결과를 토대로 은퇴한 중장년층의 사회참여에 대한 관심을 확장시키고 성공적인 사회참여를 위한 실천적 제언을 하였다.

The purpose of this study is to rediscover the meaning of social participation and what strategies are needed to promote social participation by exploring the experience of social participation process for retired mid dle-aged people. To this end, focus group interviews were conducted with 11 retired middle-aged people between the ages of 50 and 64, and thematic analysis was used to explore the meaning and strategy of the social participation process. As a result of the study, 6 themes and 23 sub-themes were derived. The themes are ‘My expectations of a young man with a young heart: the emergence of worries and expectations’, ‘Incomplete fulfillment of social integration’, ‘The second phase of life: showcasing one’s strengths’, ‘Social activities that fulfill specific desires’, ‘Exploration: embracing new challenges and breaking away from established paths’, ‘The importance of social support for a fresh start’. Based on the results of this study, we expanded the interest in social participation of the retired middle-aged and made practical suggestions for successful social participation.
