이 논문은 정조 시대의 중요한 사상가 중 한 사람인 錦帶 李家煥(1742∼1801) 을 중심으로 그가 받은 정치적, 학문적 공격에 대해 살펴봄으로써 정조 시대 천주교의 확산과 관련된 조정과 사회의 불안이 어떻게 특정한 학문적 지향을 가진학자 개인에 대한 정치적 공격으로 전환되는가를 해명하려는 시도이다. 이가환에 덧씌워진 비난의 논리가 주문모 신부의 체포 등 당시 정치적 국면과 사건에 따라 변화하는 과정을 『실록』과 『일성록』, 『추안급국안』 등 관찬 기록을 중심으로 살펴보려는 것이다. 이가환을 중심으로 한 정조 시대 서학과 천주교에 관한복기의 시도는 이가환이라는, 독특한 학문적 지향과 재능에도 불구하고 당파적 경쟁에 밀려 끝내 학문과 뜻을 제대로 펴지 못했던 한 남인 학자의 삶과 학문에 대한 재평가를 넘어 정조 시대 조선에서 일어난 천주교의 불씨들이 지적이고 정치적인 맥락에서 어떤 벽과 압력을 만나고 어떤 논리와 명분으로 부정되고 공격당했는지 규명하는 하나의 시론이 될 것이다. 나아가 이가환에게 가해진 정치적 비난의 논리와 명분의 변화는 이가환 개인을 향한 비판의 변화를 넘어 타자의 세계관과 지적 이념들이 당대 조정과 상층부에 어떤 긴장과 압력으로 작용했는지를 살피는 하나의 경로를 제공할 것이다.

By focusing on Yi Ga-hwan, an important thinker of the King Jeongjo period, and examining the political and academic attacks he faced, this paper attempts to elucidate how the adjustments associated with the spread of Catholicism during the Jeongjo period and the political unrest in society translate into attacks on individual scholars. Yi Gahwan was an important Southern scholar whose studies of Western mathematics and astronomy earned him the patronage of the Joseon dynasty. However, his study’s relation with Western mathematics and astronomy was instrumental in his rise to prominence, but the spread of Catholicism, a foreign and alien religion in Joseon, created social unrest and provided a prime target for attacks on him. The change in the logic and rationale of political attacks on Yi Gahwan may provide a micro perspective or pathway for interpreting the change in the logic and focus of the upper echelon's perception of the adjustment to Western learning and Catholicism, beyond the change in the evaluation of Yi Gahwan as an individual scholar.
