이 연구는 정조의 총애를 받았으나 신유옥사(辛酉獄事)에 희생된 남인계 학자 금대 이가환(錦帶 李家煥, 1742-1801)의 학문적 경향과 그 파장을 서학(西學)을 중심으로 살펴보려는 시도이다. 이가환은 학문적으로는 ‘천문역산 전문가’로, 정치적, 종교적 맥락에서는 ‘교난의 희생자’로 평가되며 여러 분야의 연구에서 언급되어 왔다. 그러나 그의 학문의 경향과 운명의 향방을 결정한 서학에 대한 그의 학술적 관심과 연구 경향을 포괄적으로 다룬 연구는 많지 않다. 이 연구는 특히 서학 수용과 이해라는 관점에서 이가환의 학문적, 정치적 변곡점을 조명해 보고자 한다. 이를 위해 이가환에 대한 당대의 평가를 출발점으로 두고 서양 수학을 중심으로 이가환과 교류했던 황윤석의 『이재난고』를 통해 서학의 자원과 이론을 공유했던 당대 지식인들의 횡적 네트워크를 확인할 것이다. 나아가 서학을 주제로 한 정조의 질문과 그에 대한 이가환의 답을 확인할 수 있는 『정조실록』과 『일성록』 등의 기사를 통해 이가환의 서학 연구의 범위와 수준 그리고 그에 따른 정치적 파장에 대해 살펴볼 것이다. 여러 초점을 통해 서학 연구의 파장과 그 안팎의 공명들을 살피는 일은 그가 만난 서학, 즉 그가 향했던 길과 그가 부딪친 벽을 조선 후기 지적 전환의 맥락에서 설명하기 위한 하나의 경로가 될 것이다.

This study attempts to examine the scholarly trends and implications of Yi Gahwan, who was favored by the King Jeongjo but victimized by the 1801 Catholic persecution, with a focus on Western Learning. Although he is considered an ‘astronomical expert’ in academic circles and a ‘victim of persecution’ from the perspective of Catholicism, and has been treated with great importance, there are not many studies that comprehensively address his academic interests and research tendencies in Western Learning. This study aims to shed light on the context in which Yi Gahwan is singled out from the perspective of acceptance and understanding of Western learning from various angles based on previous studies. Taking the contemporary assessment of Yi as a starting point, I will identify the transverse network of Yi’s interest in astronomy and mathematics outside the longitudinal network of being a member of Southerners, who inherited Seongho Yi ik’s Western Learning research, and enter Yi’s understanding of Western Learning through articles such as Annals of King Jeongjo and the Record of Daily Reflections. I will also examine the records of Hwang Yunseok, who interacted with Yi centered on Western mathematics, and examine Yi’s understanding of Western Learning and its orientation through discussions on Western astronomy with Jeong-jo. Examining the ripples of Western learning and their resonances within and between him through these multiple foci will be one route to explaining the Western learning he encountered—the paths he took and the barriers he encountered—in the context of late Joseon intellectual transition.
