이 글은 『피렌체사』에 나타난 파당의 끊임없는 분열과 대립을 극복하기 위해 마키아벨리가제시한 ‘절반의 승리’ 논의를 살펴보았다. 피렌체는 파당의 난립과 대결을 제어할 좋은 법제도가부재하였다. 따라서 지도자의 역할이 그 무엇보다 중요하였다. 인간은 더 많은 권력을 가지고 싶어 하는 야망과 욕구에 쉽게 무너지게 마련이었다. 이를 제어할 방법은 너무 많은 것을 원하면가진 것마저 다 잃는 결과를 가져온다는 역사적 사실을 보여주는 것이었다. 완전한 승리가 가져오는 증오의 정치는 곧 반격을 불러일으켜 혼란을 가져온다. 이에 마키아벨리는 절반의 승리의지혜가 필요함을 말한다. 절반의 승리는 패자를 완전히 배제하는 것이 아니다. 기존 세력들의 공존을 꾀하는 것이다. 절반의 성공이 보여주는 공존의 기술은 공동체 구성원이 같이 살기 위해필요한 정치적 기예이다. 하지만 더 중요한 것은 공존의 기술로서 절반의 승리는 타인뿐만이 아니라, 내가 살아남기 위한 필수요소라는 것이다. 완전한 승리는 나만이 사는 길 같지만 같이 공멸하는 길이다. 절반의 승리는 같이 살아남아 공존공생하게 되는 길인 것이다.

This article examined the discussion of ‘half a victory’ presented by Machiavelli to overcome the constant confrontation of factions in Florentine Histories. Florence lacked a good legal system to control the rampage and confrontation of factions. Therefore, the role of the leader was more important than anything else. Humans were easily crushed by the ambition to have more power. The way to control this was to show the historical fact that wanting too much results in losing everything. The politics of hatred brought about by complete victory soon provokes a counterattack and chaos. In response, Machiavelli says that the wisdom of half a victory is needed. Half a victory does not completely exclude losers. It is to seek the coexistence of existing powers. The skill of coexistence shown by half-success is a political skill necessary for community members to live together. But more importantly, half a victory is not only for others, but also for me to survive. A complete victory seems to be the only way I live, but it is the way to co-destroy together. The half a victory is the way to survive together and coexist.
