A Study on Factors Affecting Adult Users’ Intention to Continue Using the Metaverse and the Moderating Effect of Interactivity

This study sought to identify the differences in user characteristics factors that affect the intentions to continue using the metaverse and the moderating effects of interactivity depending on whether the experience participating in metaverse-based education. In March 2023, valid 396 data collected through an online survey targeting people with metaverse using experience in the 20s to 50s in Korea were analyzed at a significance level of .005 to control for the multiple testing problems. The analysis was performed in the following order: t-test, ANOVA, multiple regression analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The differences in intention to continue using the metaverse were found to depend on the number of users’ participation in metaverse-based activities and whether or not they have experience participating in education. The intentions to continue using the metaverse were found to depend on the personal innovativeness and perceived usefulness of participants who had previously experienced education activities in the metaverse. However, the moderating effects of interactivity in the metaverse were not statistically verified. The implications for the planning and instructional design of metaverse-based educational activities are discussed.

본 연구는 메타버스 사용지속의향이 사용자의 인구통계학적 배경 변인, 메타버스 기반 활동 참여 횟수, 메타버스 기반 교육참여 경험유무에 따라 차이가 있는지 알아보고, 메타버스 기반 교육참여 경험유무에 따른 사용자의 사용지속의향에 영향을 미치는 개인적 특성 요인들(자기효능감, 개인 혁신성, 지각된 유용성)의 차이와 기술적 특성(상호작용성)의 조절 효과를 검증하는 데 목적을 두고 수행되었다. 이를 위하여 2023년 3월, 국내 20대~50대의 메타버스 유경험자 대상의 온라인 설문을 통해 수집된 유의미한 396부를 데이터 분석에 활용하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 사용자의 메타버스 기반 활동 참여 횟수와 교육참여 경험유무에 따라 사용지속의향은 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 메타버스 기반 교육참여경험이 있는 사용자의 개인 혁신성과 지각된 유용성은 사용지속의향에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 메타버스 상호작용성의 조절효과는 통계적으로 검증할 수 없었다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 메타버스 기반 교육 활동의 계획과 교수설계를 위한 시사점을 제시하였다.
