본 논문은 1996년 다테 교코에서 2023년 플레이브 그룹에 이르기까지의 국내외 가상 아이돌들의 특징과 양상을 일관된 분석 틀 하에 분석했다. 기존 연구들에서 모호했던 가상 아이돌의 개념과 기준을 정의하고, 선행 연구들을 바탕으로 첫째, 멤버구성 등 기본 정보, 둘째, 현실 세계 기반의 활동 영역, 셋째, 인간형 및 비인간형 등의 외형과 감정 표현력, 넷째, 노래 장르와 보컬, 다섯째, 팬덤 크기 및 팬의 상·하향식 콘텐츠 생성 정도를 항목들로 구성한 분석 틀을 제시해 17명 또는 그룹의 가상 아이돌들을 분석했다. 이를 통해 그룹형 가상 아이돌의 약진, 현실과 가상 인간이 혼재하는 그룹 출현, 최근에 이를수록 완전 인간형, 비인간형, 만화적 형상으로의 표현 다양화, 현실 세계 활동 영역 확장과 팬덤 콘텐츠의 양상 변화를 파악했다. 본 연구는 30년에 걸친 가상 아이돌의 전체적인 흐름과 양상을 볼 수 있는 최초 논문이라는 점에서 중요성을 지닌다.

This paper presents the analysis results of the characteristics and trends of virtual idols, from 1996 with Date Kyoko to 2023 with the Plave Group, using the common analytical framework. By defining the concept of virtual idols, which has been ambiguously used in previous studies, and building upon prior research, this study analyzes 17 virtual idols based on the following categories: first, basic information such as member composition; second, activity areas based in the real world; third, appearance and expressive capabilities including humanoid and non-humanoid forms; fourth, song genres and vocals; and fifth, fandom size and the amount of fan-made upward and fan-engaged downward content. Through the analysis, this study identifies the progress of group-based virtual idols; emergence of groups comprising both real and virtual members; increasing diversity in the representation of fully humanoid, non-humanoid, and cartoonish forms; expansion of activity domains in the real world; and changes in the details of fandom content. This research is significant as the first paper to provide an overview of the flow and trends of virtual idols over 30 years.
