A Study on Poetic Design with Objects as a Medium

Today's technology-based object(product) interaction design emphasizes 'ease of use' and 'joy of use' as key values in research and development. However, what are some more creative and aesthetic approaches to object interaction design that move away from a reliance on "usability"? This study aims to explore the concept of 'poetic design' as an alternative and discuss its definition, methods, and values. To this end, an interpretive research methodology is adopted by referring to existing expert interviews and comparing and contrasting design case studies with literary theory and poetry studies. As a result, poetic design using objects as a medium stimulates people's curiosity and induces interpretation through poetic expression techniques. Poetic design provides a high-dimensional aesthetic experience in that it includes intellectual interaction, and it also shares the context with Critical Design. As such, poetic design that requires both aesthetic expression and critical thinking about the overall phenomenon surrounding it is of great value in design education.

오늘날의 기술 기반 오브제(제품) 인터랙션 디자인은 ‘사용의 용이성’과 ‘사 용의 즐거움’을 연구 개발의 중점 가치로 둔다. 하지만 ‘사용성’ 의존도에서 벗어나, 보다 창의적이고 심미적인 오브제 인터랙션 디자인 접근 방법에는 무엇이 있을까. 본 연구는 이에 대한 대안으로 ‘시(詩)적 디자인’ 개념을 선 정하고 그것의 정의와 방법, 의의를 논하고자 한다. 이를 위해 기(旣) 진행 된 전문가 인터뷰 자료를 참조하고, 디자인 사례 조사와 문학 이론 및 시 연구에 대한 조사를 병행하여 그 내용들을 비교 검토하는 해석적 연구 방 식을 취한다. 결과, 오브제 기반의 시적 디자인은 비유ᆞ상징ᆞ반어ᆞ역설 ᆞ과장법과 같은 시적 장치를 활용하여 기존 제품의 전형성을 탈피한 함축 적 형태와 인터랙션 방식으로 사람들의 상상력을 자극하고 해석을 유도한 다. 지적 인터랙션을 특징으로 하는 시적 디자인은 고차원의 심미적 경험을 제공하고, 비판적 의도를 완곡하게 표현함으로써 크리티컬 디자인 분야로 연결된다. 이처럼 심미적 표현과 함께 관련 현상에 대한 인지적ᆞ정의적 사 고를 요하는 시적 디자인은 디자인 교육 분야에서도 가치가 크다.
