談話–社会間の弁証法的関係 - 岡倉覚三著『東洋の覚醒』を事例として -

초록/요약

본고의 목적은 논증학(argumentation studies) 관점에서 담화 분석을 행함으로써 담화–사회 간 변증법적 관계(dialectical relation)를 밝히는 데에 있다. 담화–사회 간 변증법적 관계란 CDA (Critical Discourse Analysis; 비판적 담화분석)를 특징짓는 주요 가정 중 하나이며, 사회에서의 언어 사용으로서의 담화와 사회 사이의 상호 구성 관계를 뜻하는 것이다. 본고가 입각하는 이론적 기반은 세 개가 있다. 즉 A. Giddens가 제창하는 구조화 이론(structuration theory), N. Fairclough들이 주창하는 논증 기반 CDA (argumentation–based CDA), 또한 수사학적 시각에서의 논증 개념(rhetorical argumentation)이다. 구조화 이론은 담화–사회 간 변증 법적 관계의 배후에 행위주체성(agency)과 사회구조(social structure) 간의 상호 작용을 상정 할 수 있다는 점, 그리고 담화–사회 간 변증법적 관계는 사회적 행위를 행하는 행위주체의 인식 과정으로서 파악할 수 있다는 점을 이해하게 도와준다. 논증 기반 CDA는 변증법적 관계를 실천 논증(practical argumentation)에서의 실천 추론(practical reasoning)으로서 포착할 수 있게하며, 그로인해 본 과제를 논증학의 틀로 더욱 추구할 수 있게 한다. 나아가 실천 논증과 친화성이 높은 수사학적 시각 논증 개념은 오카쿠라 카쿠조 저 『동양의 각성』이라는 담화 의 기조에 있는 실천 추론에서 명시되지 않는 “가치”전제(premise)가 어떤 것인지를 밝히게 한다. “가치”전제의 이러한 복구는 실천 추론이 소급적으로(retrospectively) 작용함을 상정함 으로써 가능하게 되는 것이다. 실천 추론의 이러한 소급적 작용이야 말로 『동양의 각성』이라 는 실천 논증에서 나타나는 담화–사회 간 변증법적 관계라고 결론지을 수 있다.

초록/요약

The aim of this study is to clarify what the dialectical relation between discourse and society is, and how it is attained, by conducting discourse analysis from the perspective of argumentation studies. The dialectical relation between discourse and society, being one of the principal assumptions that characterize CDA, or Critical Discourse Analysis, denotes that discourse, that is, social use of language, and society are in a mutually constitutive relationship. Theoretical bases to which this study is significantly indebted are as follows: A. Giddens’ structuration theory, I. Fairclough and N. Fairclough’s (2012) argumentation–based CDA, and the rhetorical orientation to argumentation, or what this study calls rhetorical argumentation. Structuration theory contributes to the understanding that this theme can be ultimately distilled into the cognitive process of human agents engaged in social activities. The Faircloughs’ argumentation–based CDA enables a conceptual transformation of the dialectical relation into dialectical reasoning exercised in practical argumentation so that we can work on this theme within the framework of argumentation studies. Rhetorical argumentation facilitates the identification of presumably implicitly embedded value premise of practical reasoning underlying the discourse of The Awakening of the East, Okakura Kakuzō’s (1863–1913) posthumously published manuscript. The successful retrieval of the value premise in the discourse leads us to the conclusion that the retrospective flow of practical reasoning activated in the discourse of The Awakening of the East as practical argumentation can be identified as the discourse–society dialectic in this case.
