Jia Zhangke’s latest documentary <Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue>(2020) is the last piece of his documentary trilogy on Chinese artists. More than 10 years after <Dong>(2006), which deals with painter Liu Xiaodong and his works, and <Useless>(2007), which contains fashion designer Ma Ke and the meaning of clothes, Jia Zhangke explores 70 years of modern Chinese history through the stories of four contemporary writers. Through the lives and literature works of Ma Feng, Jia Pingwa, Yu Hua, and Liang Hong, who were born in the 20s, 50s, 60s, and 70s, respectively, the film summons the meaning of native soil that has been gradually forgotten in China’s modernization process. The oral statements of writers who testify about the turbulent era show that native soil is not only their literary starting point but also the spiritual root of whole Chinese culture. The title of film, ‘Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue’, was borrowed from an episode that Yu Hua told in an interview. Yu Hua used to swim in the sea when he was young. He tells that the textbook said that the sea is blue, but the sea he saw at that time was yellow. He thought the color of the sea would turn blue someday if he continued to swim far away. After listening to his story, Jia Zhangke decided to make the title of this documentary <Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue>. This story not only exemplifies Yu Hua’s attitude to pursue the truth by struggling with reality, but also Jia Zhangke’s attitude of creating a documentary that resonates with Yu Hua’s attitude. He wants to keep an objective distance when making a feature film, but he approaches the object to capture the truth inherent in reality when filming a documentary. In this sense, it can be said that the formal characteristics shown in Jia Zhangke’s documentary is mainly due to his attitude toward reality.
