A Phenomenological Study on the Teaching Professional Adjustment of Elementary School Counselors in the Pandemic Situation -Focused on Beginning Teachers’ Adjustment in the COVID-19 Pandemic Situation-

초록/요약

Purpose: During the COVID-19 Pandemic, there have been formidable changes in the area of education. This study was conducted to explore the process of teaching professional adjustment of beginning elementary school counselors in their induction period, which coincides with the era of COVID-19. Methods: Six elementary school counselors who started their teaching profession during 2020~2021 were interviewed and the result was analyzed by phenomenological method. Results: According to the study, they suffered from following 3 sub-topics:‘Hardships of collaborating with other members of the school due to lack of face-to-face communication’,‘Difficulties with activated non face-to-face counseling and teaching’ and ‘Difficulties with counseling due to uncertain circumstances’. There were 3 sub-topics derived from how they coped with their hardships.‘Extending communication opportunities with the school members’,‘Developing profession by non face-to-face learning and online communities’and ‘Using psychological strategies when coping with difficulties in their process of professional adaptation’. Conclusion: Two major implications were drawn from the conclusion concerning school counseling in disaster situations like COVID-19 Pandemic. First, the necessity of systemic support for beginning elementary school counselors. Second, the need for coherent guidelines for beginning elementary school counselors.
