A Study on Perception of Chinese during the Joseon Dynasty

초록/요약

The way of thinking in East Asia has been changed rapidly during modern period. In ancient East Asia, written language that has passed down through education and learning by the privileged class was respected as a formal way of communication, but spoken language was not treated as important. Written language which was exclusively circulated in the intellectual and different from spoken language began to enter into the unification period with spoken language during 19th century. However, it seems that we, living in an era of the unity of speech and writing are completely unware of the discrepancy two centuries ago. In the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty written and spoken language were recorded as 華語 and 漢語, respectively Both of them were translated into chinese language without discriminating them. such an incorrect translation has caused even greater errors. It is necessary to correct properly the perception of ancient East Asian language/character to understand and succeed to the legacy and achievements of our ancestors.
