Fundamental Studies for the Adsorption Feature of Azobenzene from Water onto Activated Carbon: Adsorption Equilibrium and Kinetic Studies and Thermodynamic Parameters

초록/요약

The adsorption of Azo dye Azobenzene onto granular activated carbon(GAC) has been studied. We investigated various physicochemical parameters such as reaction temperature, initial pH, initial dye concentration and pre-treatment by HCl and NaOH to achieve maximum adsorption. The adsorption reached at the equilibrium state about 3 h from the beginning of the experiments. With varying the initial dye concentrations, the results showed that the adsorption capacity increased as the initial concentration increased along with reaction temperature. The kinetic studies indicated that the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model(). The equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich models. The results indicate that the Freundlich model provides the best correlation(=0.984) of the experimental data. The thermodynamic parameters were also determined. The enthalpy change of adsorption was 10.38kJ/mol. Adsorption rate increased for the activated carbon pretreated with increasing concentration of HCl. But, Increasing concentration of NaOH made adsorption rate decreased. Adsorption increased with decreases in solution pH and increase in solution ionic strength.
