Teacher Requirements in Team Teaching : Focus on a Japanese Class at a Four-Year University

초록/요약

The context of this research is a team teaching class led by one non-nativeJapanese teacher (NNT) and one native Japanese teacher (NT). This studyaims to investigate the roles that Korean college students taking Japanese as ageneral course expect an NNT and an NT to perform to help them learn moreeffectively. The data were coded qualitatively using contents analysis. As aresult, 38 items were extracted for the NNT and 57 items were extracted forthe NT. The findings showed that the students required the NNT to teachgrammar in more effective ways because they shares the same native languagewith the students, which enables them to understand the grammar moreconcretely. The students also expected the NT to help increase theircommunication abilities for real life situations, provide opportunities to conversewith each other, and create an environment to speak Japanese smoothly withoutpressure. The common requirements for both the NNT and NT included lessonplans that should consider students’ individual needs and the ability to observean individual learner with care.
